By educating for sustainable development at the Vienna International School (VIS), we aim to support our students in their journeys to become responsible global citizens that adapt their lifestyles and the way of thinking towards a sustainable lifestyle. Through the Integration of the Eco School International Programme and the Sustainable Development Goals in the curriculum, our students gain an understanding of the world's relevant issues that should be targeted to achieve the sustainability of our planet.
As part of the “How the world works” Unit of Inquiry, the students in Grade 3 participated in the Biodiversity Exhibition organized by the Primary School with support from the Eco School Coordinator. Since the museums were closed due to the existing pandemic, the school took the initiative to bring the Museum to the students by organising a complex exhibition in the Octagon throughout a few days. The students were able to admire and touch numerous insects, shells and stones, as part of their investigation on how the world works and the different elements which are part of it.
Not only were students able to understand more about the evolution concept but also on the importance of preserving the planet’s biodiversity, in a hands-on learning experience in the cozy school environment.
At VIS, our belief is that students who develop their understanding of the sustainability concept, will later be empowered to take action, seek solutions and respond to the actions needed to sustain the planet.
