On Wednesday, 16 October, we celebrated Unity Day—a special occasion dedicated to fostering kindness, inclusion, and teamwork within our school community. Unity Day emphasises the importance of making everyone feel they belong, regardless of individual beliefs, values, or ideas. It reminds us that “accepting doesn’t mean agreeing”; instead, it’s about supporting each other and creating a safe, welcoming environment for all.
The day encouraged students to reflect on how they contribute to a positive school environment and consider their sense of belonging and how they help others feel connected here at VIS. In the Primary School, we focused on the significance of names and how they reflect identity, build connections, and promote cultural awareness. Through read-alouds focused on names and circle discussions, students explored these themes together. Names are special, and using them thoughtfully shows that we care and that everyone belongs. In the Secondary School, students participated in the PASS survey, a tool that lets them express their attitudes toward school, learning, and personal experiences. This survey provides valuable insights to help us better support each student’s well-being and strengthen their sense of belonging at VIS.
As a visible outcome of Unity Day, students left small notes on Post-Its sharing why they feel they belong at VIS. Thank you to everyone who participated—your messages have created a wonderful display! Be sure to check them out; they’re currently showcased in the Mall. Let’s continue to make VIS a place where everyone feels at home!
